Mozilla Outs Desktop version of Firefox OS

Are you willing to get your hands onto the latest mobile operating system ‘Boot to Gecko’ or the now renamed ‘Firefox OS’ from Mozilla? Well what could be a better way to try it than a desktop version of the highly awaited OS? Mozilla has released a desktop version of its Firefox OS allowing developers to have a sneak peak the OS before it is officially made available on phones.

Mozilla has ensured that it gets the highest audience for the Firefox OS and for that it has released the builds for all three major desktop operating systems: Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Mozilla's Tony Chung wrote in a blog post, "If you're a web developer, you can use these builds to create and test your webApp against."

The Firefox maker is probably looking to get as many developers on board as possible before the official launch on phones. The reason is obvious. It would want a truck load of apps to go along with the OS to make it successful.

"If you're looking to help do some testing, these desktop builds will also give you an immediate opportunity to play with and help us write test plans and file bugs. We encourage anyone interested to give the desktop builds a spin." Chung added.

Gaia/Hacking has the setup instructions. You would need a Gaia profile to launch the build otherwise you might encounter a black screen. Further information is available in Chung's blog post.

Mozilla has already named TCL Communication Technology and ZTE as its manufacturing partners earlier this month. Mozilla has said that quite a few telecom operators have expressed their willingness to offer Firefox OS-powered devices including the likes of Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Sprint, Telecom Italia, and Telenor.
