VLC Media Player to Support BitTorrent Streaming, Soon

VLC, one of the most popular media players on the planet, is going to get a lot more appealing as the non-profit organization behind VLC – VideoLan, is going ahead with the plans of adding BitTorrent streaming capabilities to the media player allowing users to stream media content directly from magnet / torrent links.

VideoLan has posted a job on Elance whereby the developer whose submission will be accepted will be paid $10,000. VideoLan is looking for a patch from developers that will allow users to play media files by directly opening a magnet or torrent link from VLC provided enough bandwidth is available.

The project description on Elance reads, “The developer should submit a working patch for VLC that lets a user open a torrent file or ‘magnet link’ in VLC, and start watching any media files within VLC after a minimal delay.” The non-profit organization is also demanding that the patch should meet with high quality standards of the VLC player.

According to VideoLAN’s Jean-Baptiste Kempf  “A BitTorrent module for VLC could be a fun idea,” notes TorrentFreak.
