Announcing the release of Linux 3.8-rc6 through a mailing list, Linus revealed that the release candidate bigger than he would have liked and that he wanted for things to have calmed down by rc6. “I'd really like things to calm down by rc6, because usually I aim for rc7 to be roughly the last rc in the series, and that means that I don't want to see hundreds of patches”, Linus wrote in the mailer.
Linus wants the rc7 to be smaller than the current release and he is warning developers not to send in pull requests that fix things that don’t matter. He notes that developers should only send in pull requests if they have fixed major security issues or nasty bugs or user-reported regressions.
“So please help make sure that rc7 really is tiny and only contains fixed that absolutely *have* to go in,” writes Linus.
