As reported by FreeBeacon, the hackers breached several aspects of the network including the system used by White House Military Office (WHMO) that is in charge of some of the US government’s most sensitive communications, including strategic nuclear commands.
According to officials, “This was a spear phishing attack against an unclassified network.” This form of attack uses disguised emails looking to convince recipients of a specific organization in a bid to divulge confidential information. One of the officials said that this particular attack “was one of Beijing’s most brazen cyber attacks against the United States”. Chinese hackers have been known to use such form of attack mechanism and use to this technique in the latest hack points to their involvement indirectly.
In a statement to FoxNews, officials confirmed the attack but, there were no direct reference to role of China. "These types of attacks are not infrequent and we have mitigation measures in place", said one official.
