The new app, available as a Chrome extension as well as for Android, iOS, and Windows, has a serious disadvantage to the previous Talk client – it doesn’t support the XMPP open source chat protocol aka Jabber. Support for XMPP allowed Talk to communicate to XMPP accounts that were not registered with Google servers thereby allowing users to communicate with their contacts outside of Google.

Even though the latest Hangouts is powerful than its predecessors, users who are communicating using the XMPP protocol should be wary and think twice before updating to the latest Hangouts as they will not be able to communicate with their contacts through Jabber.

Jabber is the latest victim in the series of Google clean ups as prior to this the search engine giant announced removal of iCal from Google Calendar and discontinuation of Google Reader.
