The company already has 50 trucks with older 3G base stations but, the new trucks will be LTE enabled with data download speeds of up to 75Mbps. NTT DoCoMo has already put some trucks into service and plans to have a total of 30 such trucks up and running by summer and to upgrade the speeds to 112.5 Mbps.
The new LTE trucks have the capability of not only extending the currently available networks but, also have the capability of creating new networks from scratch thanks to its two large antennas.
Ideal for natural disasters like earthquakes, heavy rains and typhoos, DoCoMo is considered one of the most robust networks in Japan and is in direct competition with Softbank which uses helium-filled balloons for establishing emergency relay systems. These trucks are also useful in extending coverage and supporting a large crowd at events like the summer fireworks festivals.
