Google’s tablets running on Android operating system will overtake Apple’s iPad this year, predicted IDC on Tuesday. IDC claimed that the demand for low cost Android tablets will continue to rise upwards and will finally result in decrease in Apple’s global tablet market share. It has been estimated that Android tablets market share will hike up to 48.8 per cent by the end of this year, while Apple’s share is expected to be at 46.0 per cent, with Windows 8 and Windows RT taking up 4.7 per cent of the total share of tablet shipments this year.

Jitesh Ubrani, IDC’s Research analyst said that they expect the demand for small and low cost tablets to grow consistently in 2013 and beyond.

The situation in the previous year 2012 was absolutely opposite with Apple ruling the global tablet market with 51 per cent market share, while Android followed it with just 41.5 per cent market share.

IDC’s forecast also indicated that by 2017, Android’s global share will stand at 46 per cent while Apple’s share will fall further to 43.5 per cent. But, it should be noted that IDC’s forecast reports are prepared taking into account total number of tablet shipments rather than sales.
