The announcement was made by Canonical and the most pleasant surprise was the unexpected support for Nexus 4 devices. Along with the possibility to download/flash Ubuntu starting February 21, the source code for the OS will be made available too, together with the tools required to flash phones.

The OS is gesture based and very attractive and original, with an intelligent interface, yet a little bit slow notes The Verge. The first smart phone built and designed for Ubuntu OS will hit the markets in October this year, but the operating system is being made available earlier in a bid to get as many developers developing apps as possible.

Pat McGowan, lead behind the integration effort, said in a statement, “Our platform supports a wide range of screen sizes and resolutions. Developers who have experience bringing up phone environments will find it relatively easy to port Ubuntu to current handsets”, notes PCMag.

“We look forward to adding support for additional devices for everyday testing and experimentation.”
