The LHC has been operational for three years in a row and has generated huge amounts of research data and has led to ground-breaking discoveries like the Higgs Boson. The data so generated is still being analyzed at the moment. The planned maintenance will foresee repairs following which the collider will be capable of operating at higher speeds.

The LHC has been performing as expected and CERN has revealed that it is happy with the performance of the atom smasher. The next phase of repairs will be vital which will ensure that LHC runs as expected for years to come. The first phase of shutdown dubbed “Long Shutdown 1” (LS1) began on February 14 and during this phase, the LHC will not be smashing any atoms. Simon Baird, deputy head of the Engineering department said, “A whole series of renovation work will be carried out around the LHC during LS1.”

“The teams will start by opening up the 1695 interconnections between each of the cryostats of the main magnets. They will repair and consolidate around 500 interconnections simultaneously. The maintenance work will gradually cover the entire 27-kilometre circumference of the LHC”, he added.

The repairs are not just limited to the LHC. The renovation will also see work on Proton Synchrotron (PS); the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS); the PS access control system; the whole tunnel ventilation system; as well as the removal / replacement of 100 kilometres of radiation-damaged cables.
