The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued guidelines [PDF] for the forthcoming 2G spectrum auction. The Indian government has already sold off its 3G spectrum, which more or less will cast a shadow onto the 2G auction.

The starting price for the spectrum has been set at $2.5 billion and telecom operators have said that such a figure will invariably raise tariffs in turn affecting the consumers. The initial amount pegged was about $5.1 billion meaning that the current price is less than half of what the Government wanted to raise initially.

Operators will be allowed to send in their bids till October 19 and the final list of bidders who will be allowed to participate in the auction will be released by November 6 the DoT notes on its site.
